'An Englishman in India may be an apt description for Philips' work. His figures are a mixture of feminine and masculine that mirrors the cultural difference he has witnessed there. Though clearly male, his figures exude the grace and poise western culture have rejected as un-manly. His work proves otherwise; masculinity need not be devoid of the feminine virtues'  - E.Gibbons
